Eight Iranian officials, including two diplomats, who were detained by US troops last night in Baghdad, were released this morning. The US military said the Iranians were originally stopped at a checkpoint and the troops seized an assault rifle and pistols belonging to their bodyguards who carried no permits. The Iranians were later picked up at their hotel, blindfolded and handcuffed and taken into custody for questioning. Early this morning they were handed over to Iraqi authorities.
