In what seems to be the largest anti-government demonstrations since the post-election protests, the students in many universities throughout Iran staged demonstrations on their campuses today. The protests soon spilled outside university gates and into the city streets. There are many reports of clashes with security and Basij forces, especially in Tehran. There are no confirmed reports on number of injuries or number of people being detained. The situation on the streets of Tehran remains tense and unsettled at 4:30pm Tehran time, with clashes occurring in many parts of the city.
Unlike past demonstrations, the students marking the 16-Azar, the national student day, staged simultaneous demonstrations in different campuses and in different parts of the cities, spreading the forces of Basij and security forces, and being able to maintain their protests to this hour.
The slogans used by protestors are directly aimed at Islamic Republic’s senior leadership and their system of governance.
This blogger has participated in, witnessed and followed many 16-Azar events during the shah’s administration and under the present government. Today’s protests seem to be the most politically oriented and the best-organized 16-Azar demonstrations ever.
UPDATE: Tehran's police chief, Brig. Gen. Azizulah Rajabzaderh, told reporters in Tehran on Tuesday 8 December that 204 protesters were arrested at anti-government demonstrations in Tehran marking the 16-Azar anniversary on Monday.
UPDATE: Authorities in Tehran announced on Wednesday that 86 detainees of Monday protests have been released.
