The Iranian government announced today that its production of gasoline has reached over 66 million liters a day, making the country completely self-sufficient [Mehr News Agency, 7 September]. Iran was for decades importing more than a third of its gasoline needs from Europe and Asia. Faced with the sanctions imposed last month on the sale of gasoline to Iran, the government said it started a crash program to produce all its gasoline needs. The government spokesman did not explain why the country had not started such program decades earlier to avoid spending so much of its hard currency on gasoline imports.
