Iran to Release Sarah Shourd, One of Three American Hikers - UPDATES

The Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance announced in Tehran that one of the three American hikers arrested near the Iraqi Kurdistan border in July 2009, would be released on Saturday. According to reports by various news agencies, the Iranian Mission to the UN has identified the American to be freed as Sarah Shourd.

Joshua Fattal, Shane Bauer and Sarah Shourd are being held in Tehran’s infamous Evin prison.

UPDATE: Tehran's Prosecutor General has told Iranian news agency ILNA that the Judiciary will NOT release Ms. Shourd on Saturday. Abbas Jaffari Doulatabadi, the prosecutor, said, "the judiciary dossier of the accused is not yet complete." Sarah Shourd was to be released on Saturday morning local time during a ceremony attended by senior officials of the Islamic Republic. The senior leaders in Iran have not confirmed or denied Tehran prosecutor's assertion that Ms. Shourd would not be released as planned.

UPDATE II: Iran’s official news agency IRNA has confirmed the reports that Sarah Shourd’s release has been called off. The cruel handling of Sarah’s release again brings into question of who’s in charge in Iran.

  3. Mahmoud needs to butter up the west before he starts his nuclear tests... and how long were 52 US citizens held hostage in Iran by the terrorist mahmoud himself only to be released when fear overcame the gutless terrorists from the newly elected Reagan.

  6. Anon 5:49am,

In matters of foreign policy, the Islamic Republic has always tried to put out a united front, with the last word coming from the leader. On high-profile legal cases involving the Western citizens, in particular, the judiciary does not have the last say, it is used mainly to dress up decisions made by the political leadership

Highly doubtful that same processes did not apply to this case. The unfortunate (and the cruel) way this issue was handed, raises questions on the depth of disagreements on foreign policy among the political elites.

  7. Now Iran regime is walking the same road as Saddam Hussein trying to build a bomb against the will of the world for revenge... and in the end, the world will have the last word. Your sounding more and more like the empty liberal who resorts to verbal attacks rather than talking about the issues.

Go piss in your own pool.
