Don't make me laugh Uskowi... don't make me laugh. If Cyrus the Great saw Iran today he would be crying in his grave and you know it.

ReplyDeletePay your tribute and move on.
If Cyrus were here today, he would first slap you in the face and then pay tribute to the fallen & injured of that bloody war, then lay back to rest.
God Bless Iran and the defenders of Iran. They will never be forgotten as the nations owes them a great deal. May the blood of these noble martyrs bless Iranzamin. Iran Payendebad.
ReplyDeleteTo the a...hole who said don't make me laugh Uskowi, I take it Cyrus the Great would have smilled some 30 years ago when the country was kissing the ass of left and right, and was nothing but a pupet like the the rest of the maggots in the area. Get a life fellow!
ReplyDeleteMr.Uskowi, where are you getting the figure of 350,000 dead, if I might ask? I've seen the number of Iranian casualties number anywhere from 110,00 to 1,000,000. Is there any real source to get an accurate gauge of human loss in that warm, for both sides?
ReplyDeleteCyrus,
ReplyDeleteThe post here, and the figures in it, is based on the new Facebook page set up in tribute to the fallen. The authors of this blog include Mark Pyruz and Paul Iddon who as students of Iranian military and military history can help us best with those figure. Mark, Paul, please.
Casualty figures for Iran during the Imposed War are a bit like the spread that was estimated for Russia during the Great Patriotic War. The figure that's used most frequently for Iran is 500,000.
ReplyDeleteBear in mind, Behesht-e Zahra cemetery alone has buried 200,000 dead from the war.
The most reliable estimates for the Jange Tahmili by Iranian authorities, Red Crescent and ICRC and even many Sepah and veterans websites like Hamesheh give the total number of Iranian martyrs at about 500,000 (it also includes civilians). The wounded execeeds over a million and gas victims at about 50,000-75,000 range and mostly in the 1985-1988 time frame.
ReplyDeleteAt the time of the liberation of Khorramshahr (May 1982), most of Iranian soil was liberated by August 1982, by that time the war casualties were less than 70,000 martyred and about 200,000 wounded mostly Artesh, Sepah and Basij including civilians and volunteers in Khuzestan, Kurdestan and Ilam.
Unfortunately, the unnecessary continuation of war and the subsequent brutalities by the moron Saddam, his Arab and western backers resulting in the gas warfare and "war of cities" and a stalemate in Basra and Mehran-Mandali axis resulted in higher losses as Iranian units operated in exposed terrain without adequate armour, adequate artillery or air cover. The bravery, honour and self-sacrfice of Iranian defenders for their homeland is unparalleled in history of modern warfare. A whole generation of young sons of Iran sacrificed for their nation. Beheste Zahra and the hundreds of cemeteries that dot Iranzamin attest to their noble sacrifices and valour.
What diff. does it make, if 320---350 or 500. It is about "YOU"
ReplyDeleteDo you have the grace to sign up the tribute with your name for those who gave their lives, then you are talking.
Fearing to out yourself and picking on issues actually irrelevant to give yourselves an excuse not to ??? is cowardly, small and immoral.
This should tell you more about yourselves than anythging else.
I wrote an article about the Iran Iraq War over a year ago where I stated that around a million Iranians had been killed and was subsequently pointed to the Global Security page about that war which states amongst other things quote;
ReplyDelete'Without diminishing the horror of either war, Iranian losses in the eight-year Iran-Iraq war appear modest compared with those of the European contestants in the four years of World War I, shedding some light on the limits of the Iranian tolerance for martyrdom. The war claimed at least 300,000 Iranian lives and injured more than 500,000, out of a total population which by the war's end was nearly 60 million. During the Great War, German losses were over 1,700,000 killed and over 4,200,000 wounded [out of a total population of over 65 million]. Germany's losses, relative to total national population, were at least five times higher than Iran. France suffered over 1,300,000 deaths and over 4,200,000 wounded. The percentages of pre-war population killed or wounded were 9% of Germany, 11% of France, and 8% of Great Britain.'
Although 300,000 should still be viewed as a very conservative number for the amount of Iranians killed in that very bloody and depleting war.
Thanks for all the comments. Except for Persicus. He needs to go back on the meds.
ReplyDeleteAs for www.globalsecurity.com, that is not a source I take seriously on issues regarding Iran. Their research into the Iran-Iraq War is nil, and they couldn't help put western "stint" on the comparison of Iranian loses to WWI. Very arrogant and Euro-centric.
A better source would be the www.ACIG.org, for example. I highly recommend that site as a source on the war.
