The Iranian Defense Ministry delivered large numbers of home-made mid-range surface-to-air missiles to the country's Air Defense Unit on Sunday in a move to boost Iran's air defense power and capability.
During a ceremony attended by Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi, the Defense Ministry supplied Shalamcheh missiles to Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base.
Addressing the ceremony, Vahidi said that Shalamcheh is a Mach 3 mid-range missile that can also be used as a short-range air defense system.
The minister added that Shalamcheh is equipped with the latest technology and enjoys a high capability in tracing and intercepting targets and in defusing jamming and electronic warfare.
He said the missile traverses a range of 40km, but meantime underlined that the range of the missile would be increased in future versions and generations.
In April, Iran successfully test-fired Shalamcheh and another mid-range Hawk missile named 'Shahin' capable of tracing and targeting aggressive aircraft at low and medium altitudes.
Claimed specifications for the I-HAWK based Shalamcheh SAM:
length: 5.03 m
weight: 636 kg
diameter: 35.6 cm
speed: 2.7 mach
altitude: 60 m - 18k m
range : 40 km

Probably not on par with the latest Russian or American technology but still an amazing accomplishment. One must walk before they run.
ReplyDeleteGood old fashioned Hawk missile air defence system which is a 1970s technology so how can it be the "latest technology" what a load of propaganda !
ReplyDeleteI'm getting really tired of this nonsense by claiming it's the latest technology like for instance the F5 freedom fighter clones which they claimed looks similar to and performs like the F18 Hornet!
Honestly these people think we are simpletons !
To anonymous @9:40 AM
ReplyDelete“Good old fashion Hawk technology?” you are probably right. “Latest technology?” you don’t know, neither do I - you may or may not right on this. It is quite possible that they have improved on this very old technology by furnishing them with their own custom chips and firmware designed by young and exceptionally bright Iranian scientists and engineers – many of them probably apolitical or even sympathetic to the opposition groups. How many developing countries do you know that can produce their own Hawk missiles?
The radar section seems interesting though, looks like a phased array one. Is it safe to say it's different form the original Hawk missile radar? If so, What the potential advantages over the original I-Hawk would be?
ReplyDeleteIs this adequate to declare it as new missile, because the body clearly looks the same.
"Is this adequate to declare it as new missile, because the body clearly looks the same."
ReplyDeleteThe SM-1 missile design which has been upgraded every decade now to SM-3 is USs most advanced air defence even better then patriot and there best anti-ballistic missile weapon in the world, the SM-1 looks exactly like the SM-3 because internal only the electronics inside are different, the steering vanes and rocket motors do not realy need upgrades why does iran need to waste money on something cosemetic "its smart economics"
"Good old fashioned Hawk missile air defence system which is a 1970s technology so how can it be the "latest technology" what a load of propaganda !"
ReplyDeleteThe F15 is from the early 1970s too.
Dear reader
ReplyDeleteI wasn't degrading the engineers far from it but the charlatans that run the country.
The system was first built by the US companies Northrop and Raytheon in the early 1960s.This system was introduced to NATO as well as US allies like Iran.
Northrop agreed to build the specialist missile electrons and optics plant in Iran before the revolution the plant was completed in 1978.
What I don't like about this regime is that they lie and claim that because of the so called revolution they can only do these things but these things were planed before revolution and would have been more advanced by now.
Iran would have been the only country in late 1979 besides the US to build the missile system not now in 2011 33 years later.
This also applies to nuclear reactor which would have been completed in 1980.
All regime propaganda.
--"Probably not on par with the latest Russian or American technology but still an amazing accomplishment. One must walk before they run."---
ReplyDeleteIf it comes down to an attack from the US, having the ability to "walk" won't help and IRIADF better be able to run ...and then hide.
In reality, rather than Iranian propaganda, Iran has no effective defense against the Unites States' air force or NATO's.
The theocracy can't defend the country if it comes to war and all it really can do is send out suicide bombers to attack places.
That's not going to change real soon and if the regime decides to continue the weapons program, the chance of war against Iran goes from highly unlikely to quite possible.
Anon 1:06 PM
ReplyDeleteThat's right the F15 is 1970s airplane but a very good platform which has been updated with new engines electronics radar and weapons.
But Hawk SAM system was retired in 1994 nearly twenty years ago despite being modified several times and Iran's system is based on mark 3 or 4 system which is mid 1980s modification program.I'm not complaining about engineers but the damn regime who claims it's the latest technology which it isn't.
The factory that it's being manufactured in was built in 1978 by Northrop meaning this system would have been manufactured in 1980 not 2011 although SAM was a mark 1. Iran by now would have built an entirely newer system now.
Like our nuclear program it is 32 years behind schedule the nuclear station would have been completed and operational in 1981 not perpetually unfinished forever with old and dangerous Russian technology.
what is difference to shahin/mersad system, that is the question.
ReplyDeleteredz
ReplyDeleteBy your logic then why did US invest in F14 or Raptor they should have stuck with F4 Phantoms.
"By your logic then why did US invest in F14 or Raptor they should have stuck with F4 Phantoms."
ReplyDeletedo you honestly need answer for this
im not stating a logic
its different for different equipment
ofcourse it depends on the system if certain parts it are good while other parts that can be eaily changed then yes you can stck with certain parts while you update the rest
economically and for convinance why change something that has needed parts that do not require changing but the easily changeable parts can be changed to make the equipment so much better so you stick with the old parts that work good and just change the obsolete parts that can easily be changed
ofcourse if both parts are obsolete then youd have to find a new system completely thats why F4 wasnt kept
---"our nuclear program it is 32 years behind schedule the nuclear station would have been completed and operational in 1981 not perpetually unfinished forever with old and dangerous Russian technology."---
ReplyDeletegee, 32 years behind schedule for the power plant, but the centrifuges enriching uranium keep increasing in number and output and quality......
and nobody stops to think that the power plant just isn't really important to the regime and that maybe some other usage of nuclear material is getting priority because THAT'S what's it's all about.
"The theocracy can't defend the country if it comes to war and all it really can do is send out suicide bombers to attack places.
ReplyDelete"...
Well, hold it right there..In fact they DID defend the country against US - European backed Saddam in a brutal 8 year war.
I'm sorry but your hatred for the "Mullahs"(Mullahs are in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Iran has Imams/Ayatollahs) as you like to call them clouds your judgment on almost every achievement Iran makes.
Your criticism has no technical bases other than throwing useless words around like "1970 tech" etc. it still doesn't change the fact that this system has indeed been upgraded and guess what, even some US allies still use this system as their backbone air defence system..
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/taiwan/air-defense-over.htm
But why bother with logic when hatred trumps common sense, right?
The "32 year" power plant just went online...I guess that blows the whole argument that it's NEVER been completed outta the water...Sheesh...
ReplyDeleteTo those who not know the difference between the Iranian Shahin and new Shalamcheh missile.
ReplyDeleteShahin missile is similar to (Hawk XXI) specification here some details from (Hawk XXI) advertising magazine
range 35 KM
altitude 10 KM
Weight 590 kg
Length 5.08 m
Diameter 370 mm
Source:
http://www.raytheon.com/businesses/rtnwcm/groups/public/documents/content/rtn_bus_ids_prod_hawkxxi_pdf.pdf
to those who thing the similar outside looking, making this missile an old 1980th tech.
here is the picture of (MIM-23_HAWK) radar_seeker from wiki site:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/02/MIM-23_radar_seeker_DSCN4273.JPG/220px-MIM-23_radar_seeker_DSCN4273.JPG
To Mr.Uskowi:
1-Please add the Semi-active radar homing, in specification if possible
2-Also Please if possible put the HAWK Radar seeker under Iranian Phase array radar for people who do not know that in military tech looking is means almost nothing, and its not a fashion show.
IS THERE ANYONE WHO DOUBTS THE CAPABILITIES OF THE IRANIAN MISSILES?-the Nato defense shield wouldn't come to Turkey!!

Anon 2:28 AM...Yes 32 years by now we would have had 25 reactors online but your head is so deep into the sand that it's made you unaware of reality.
Don't worry something will close the reactor down due to "technical problems".

funny that, trying to compare the Iraqi Army (as it once existed) to the US military....
If you think proving equal to the Iraqis means that Iran has a chance to hold off the US or NATO, then you probably think that the Saddam's army was able to defend the country when the US invaded.
SO GREAT ARE IRANIAN MISSILES. THEY PUT FEAR OF GOD ON NATO.

THEY ARE STILL THE BULL WORK OF THE RUSSIAN MILITARY!

COUNTER SUPPRESSIVE ANTI ELECTRONIC WARFARE DIRECT ATTACK RADAR. ANTI SHIP AND ANTI SURFACE MISSILES. STEALTH ANTI AIRCRAFT MISSILES GUARDING EVERY SECTOR OF THE HOMELAND. IRAN ALSO HAS UNMATCHED MISSILE BOAT TECHNOLOGY TRAINED IN SOPHISTCATED MARITIME CHINESE STYLE SWARM TECHNIQES. WHICH WAS A CONCERN OF U.S. ADMIRAL MIKE MULLEN. IF U.S., NATO

ReplyDeleteIran will indeed attack all over the world as those carrier group level the Iranian military at home.
Iran will indeed attack those carrier groups with everything that it has and indeed my damage some of the US warships. But it simply can't destroy carrier groups and it has nothing to stop the US from controlling the airspace above Iran and destroying anything on the surface of Iran.
Hezbollah can set off bombs against a hundred targets in other places and kill people not taking part in a war against Iran, but the Iranian military can't defend the nation ....at all.... if it comes to a war with the US or NATO.
all the bluster and boasting in the world, and the Iranian regime is very practiced at it, and all the cries of "death to America" as well, won't be worth a cup of warm spit if the guns start to speak.
people here stupidly repeat the lie that America won't dare to attack Iran, but it's a lie all the same.
people here repeat the lie that America would already have attacked Iran if Iran wasn't too mighty for America and that too is a lie.
I'm sure that in their hearts these people know the truth. America chooses to tolerate Iran rather than crush it, but America has weapons that could turn part or all of Iran flat and lifeless .
America would rather reach some deal with Iran than use such things. There will be no war if Iran proves that it stops the nuclear weapons program and gives up working to develop the weapons that says that it doesn't want.
Continue to develop those weapons and Iran just might get the war that they boast they'll win.
To all those NATO "lets bomb Iran" supporters..Here's something to suck on..
ReplyDeleteSomewhere back in 2007, a US general threatened to quit IF the US government make the stupid decision to launch an attack on Iran..Now, to those not so familiar with the structure of NATO, the US is pretty much the backbone that organization.Take away the US and NATO becomes ZERO.You can't make this up.
If a US general sees the writings on the wall, PlayStation kids should very well pay attention.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article1434540.ece
Bravado aside, NATO ONLY ATTACKS WEAKER AND DEFENSELESS COUNTRIES and Iran is in no way a weak or defenseless country, militarily. One thing for sure though, if NATO ever dares to attack, Iran will strike back and WILL strike hard..How Iran strikes back is best left to military experts to discuss.
Personally, I don't see the logic in NATO attacking Iran when all their bases are within range and totally exposed to Iranian medium range missiles. Take a look on the map and Iran's sheer size will not only tell you it's not only stupid but suicidal for any attacker to even attempt that adventure.
If you've been reading the recent wikileaks, it's clear the West(NATO) have no military strategy on dealing with Iran and have rather resorted to softer means like colored revolutions(which failed badly),to beaming massive propaganda PR BS and pin-prick cowardly attacks on softer targets like attacking scientists in front of their families in order to spread fear/intimidation in the Iranian scientist community.
And where do you people get this crazy idea that the "Mullahs" are praying for war? If they really were praying for war, wouldn't it make sense for them to rather launch one on the many NATO bases in the region to initiate a response from NATO?
Again, common sense is the enemy of all trolls..

ReplyDeleteSIR, HAVE YOU NOT PAID ATTENTION TO MY POINTS? THEIR WILL BE NO AIR SUPERIORITY, FOR NATO THIS TIME.
THE BULLWORK OF THEIR AIR SUPERIORITY ARE THE CARRIER BATTLE GROUPS. THEY WILL FAIL MISERABLY!
THEY WILL NOT ACHIEVE AIR SPACE CONTROL OF IRANIAN SKIES BECAUSE THE CARRIERS WILL BE ATTACKED. BY THE IRANIAN NAVY. THIS TIME U.S. NATO COMMUNICATIONS WILL BE ATTACKED THEY WILL HAVE TO DEPLOY DEFENSIVE OPERATIONS, WHICH WILL IMPEADE THEIR ABILITY TO ACCOMPLISH AIR SUPERIORITY.
U.S., NATO ALLIED NAVIES WILL BE FORCED TO CONFORM TO NEW STRATEGIES, TACTICS, DUE TO SUBSTANTIAL LOSSES OF NAVAL FORCES. PENTAGON BRASS HAS ALREADY MADE AN ASSESMENT OF THIS SCENARIO. THEIR IS NOTHING THAT YOU CAN SAY TO CHANGE THIS FACT. PENTAGON BRASS COULD CARELESS ABOUT TOLERATING THE MULLAHS OR THE IRANIAN IRGC. THEYRE SIMPLY AFRAID OF THE MULLAHS AND THE IRGC. AMERICAN POLITICIANS. DONT WANT TO ANSWER TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE FOR ANOTHER FAILED ADVENTURIST WAR. U.S., NATO GAINED AIR SUPERIORITY OVER IRAQ SKIES BECAUSE IRAQI AIR DEFENSE WAS WEAK,IRAQ HAD NO NAVY TO ATTACK U.S., NATO CARRIERS, THAT CARRIED THE PLANES TO ACHIEVE AIR DOMINANCE. WAR WITH IRAN IS A DISADVANTAGE AND A LIABILITY! AND THE PENTAGON BRASS KNOW IT! THATS WHY THEY WON'T RISK IT UNLESS THEY ARE FORCED TOO. YOUR COMMENT ON U.S., NATO USING NUKES AGAINST IRAN, DOES NOT FLY EITHER, AS THIS WOULD VIOLATE THE S.T.A.R.K. TREATY. IRAN IS A MEMBER OF THE BLACK SEA STATES AND IN THE TREATY ANY MEMBER ATTACKED IS CONSIDERED A VIOLATION. THAT MEANS RUSSIA UKHRAIN, NUCLEAR FORCES WILL BE ACTIVATED. SO YOU SEE IT'S MORE COMPLICATED THAN YOU THINK.I KNOW THAT MOST OF THE BLOGGERS OF THIS BLOG WANT THE MULLAHS HEAD ON A STICK! BUT IT'S JUST NOT THAT SIMPLE. YOU GUYS NEED TO DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU COMMENT ON MILITARY AFFAIRS BECAUSE MOST OF YOU SOUND LIKE AMATEURS! GEEESH!
IN ADDITION, AMERICANS WILL HAVE TO ENACT THE DRAFT, AND GO ON A MASSIVE RECRUITMENT DRIVE AND FACE LOOSING TENS OF THOUSANDS OF YOUNG AMERICANS.
SO YOU SEE, U.S. NATO FORCES CAN ACHIEVE AIR DOMINANCE ONLY ON WEAK STARVING LITTLE NATIONS LIKE IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN. AND GET THEIR BUT'S KICKED IN A GROUND INVASION WHEN THEY STAY TOO LONG. AND LEAVE HUMILIATED AND DEFEATED. NO WONDER THE WORLD HAS LOST ITS RESPECT FOR THE GREAT SUPER POWER.

BTW you don't need to put your comments in UPPER CASE. That is a sign of frustration and impolite.
Anyhow back to your point on:
"THEY WILL NOT ACHIEVE AIR SPACE CONTROL OF IRANIAN SKIES BECAUSE THE CARRIERS WILL BE ATTACKED. BY THE IRANIAN NAVY. "
How is this going to happen? What means does Iran have to do so? Few 50 + year old british made frigates and some fast boats.
If you recall, Operation Praying Mantis conducted by US navy against Iranian navy was devastating and resulted in loss of Sahand frigate and an oil platform.
I fail to see how Iranian navy with outdated ships is going to challenge US and other Nato ships in Persian Gulf and see of Oman.
Get real sir!
Anon 6 September 10:24 AM
ReplyDeleteThank you for your very intelligent assessment!
May I add another little detail as you well know the US navy possesses a number of nuclear powered submarines with first strike capability with their intercontinental ballistic missiles which can unfortunately strike Iran from anywhere on the globe.
What these regime nuts don't seem to realize is that Iranian missile technology is 55 years behind US missile technology.
All the US has to do is sit somewhere in the Pacific ocean and fire their conventional armed warheads at important Iranian sites. This doesn't include their Tomahawk cruise missile or the US carriers with 90 airplanes each and their spy satellites that orbit the earth.
But hey you tell them that and they still live in the dark ages by their self denial in simple education.
I have no pity on those poor souls because they will have to learn the hard way !

---"SIR, HAVE YOU NOT PAID ATTENTION TO MY POINTS? THEIR WILL BE NO AIR SUPERIORITY, FOR NATO THIS TIME.
ReplyDeleteTHE BULLWORK OF THEIR AIR SUPERIORITY ARE THE CARRIER BATTLE GROUPS."---
yes, I have read what you write.
it's stupidly and completely erroneous.
the air superiority of the US it total and needn't be based on naval support. the carrier groups are convenient, not necessary.
the US has airplanes that can take off from inside the US, refuel in mid-air, and level Iran's defenses.
US and NATO war planes are stationed in Afghanistan, Bahrain, Turkey, Iraq, Germany and a dozen other locations.
The US has ICBMs that can be rained on iran by the thousand.
That's all in addition to the carrier groups that Iran can huff and puff and blow against, but can't destroy before they do their work.
War with the US id not an answer for the Iranian regime. It would be a catastrophic failure for Iran and an end to the regime.
It needn't happen and it should be feared and avoided.
70s tech?? That tech that destroyed b52's & other jet types in vietnam?? B52's might not be used any more in the future, but 1 have to ponder this legendary '70's tech'.
