Iran’s permanent mission to the UN said in a letter to
the Security Council that the islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb
are “inseparable part of Iranian territory.” The letter also said that the
visit by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Abu Musa on 11 April was in line with
“Iran’s sovereign rights and the principles of its territorial integrity.
The UAE has laid claims over the three islands and regarded Ahmadinejad’s visit to Abu Musa as a violation of its territorial sovereignty. In the letter to the Security Council, Iran called for “constructive” talks with UAE to clear “misunderstandings” over the islands. [IRNA/Press TV, 21 April].
