XVI Summit of Non-Aligned Movement To Convene in Tehran

The Tehran Conference of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) will start its six-day work on Sunday. The first two days will bring together the subject matter experts from member countries to put final touches on the resolutions to be adopted by the conference. On 28-29 August, the foreign ministers will meet to examine the proposals and on 30-31 August, the XVI Summit of Non-Aligned Movement will be held.

NAM was formally created by 25 countries at the Belgrade Conference in September 1961. The creation of the organization was preceded by the Bandung (Indonesia) Conference of 1955 and the tripartite meetings of Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser, India’s Jawaharlal Nehru and Yugoslavia’s Josip Broz Tito in 1956. NAM was a product of the Cold War, offering an alternative to the Third World countries which were being forced to take side with either the Western or the Eastern camps.

The dissolution of the Soviet Union and the Eastern block nearly forty years after NAM’s establishment made its original charter obsolete and to this day the organization has been struggling to define its mission or offer a rationale for its continued existence in the absence of two camps it was created to be independent of. Radical actors within NAM, such as Venezuela and the Islamic Republic, have been pushing the organization to become an anti-Western body, but without much success.

Meanwhile, the Iranian officials reported today that 51 leaders will attend the Summit. The number, if accurate, falls within the norm of the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit in 2009 and the Havana Summit in 2006. The government, however, has so far released only the name of 14 countries whose leaders will attend: Egypt, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kuwait, Qatar, Lebanon, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Venezuela and Bolivia.

It's a hypocritical organization, because how can Qatar,Azerbaijan,Egypt etc be non-aligned when they receive their arms from the US?
Same goes for Iran. How can Iran be non-aligned and peaceful when the Islamic regime threaten to wipe Israel off the map and support terrorist organizations like HAMAS and Hezbollah to attack civilians with?
As well as their support for that terrorist Assad regime which murders the Syrian people by the thousands.
They are all hypocrites. So this organization is meaningless and should abolished.
I think the so called government in Iran should be helping the poor earthquake victims buried under the rubble, instead of wasting millions of dollars on useless conferences while the Iranian people can't afford to buy chicken and even put bread on their table.
Disgraceful charlatans!

Iran just announced that Prince Abdulaziz bin Abdullah, a deputy FM and the third son of King Abdullah, as the Saudi rep for NAM summit. Since I am one of the 'dumb masses' as it relates to the house of Faud, can anyone enlighten me as to whether this is a slight or rapprochement. His brief bio indicates that he was a special adviser to his dad on Syria for a long time. So, I am currently intellectually stunned; I don't know what to make of this.

Saudi Arabia follows israeli recommendations that the Nam countries should boycott Iran meeting or send low level dignitaries, such as deputies...

there is and will not be any rapproachement between the governments of Iran and Saudi Arabia until one or more of those governments is replaced.

Hopefully both a hopefully by a government comprised of decent people and hopefully very soon.

Thanks, I appreciate the input. But my ignorance lies in the Saud family politics.

I know that Egypt's President Morsi suggested in the recent OIC meeting in Arabia for a Tetrad among Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia & Turkey, on Syria. As such, it is obvious that the four will meet on the sidelines of NAM.

Unfortunately, I don't know if Prince Abdulaziz is a favorite son or not. I simply don't know the peeking order within the family.

Anyone with insight would be appreciated. This is what this site should be about (sharing info to enrich the dumb masses).
