Netanyahu Draws Red Line Regarding Iran Uranium Enrichment Program

Spells Out Limit to Prevent Iran from Becoming A Nuclear Power

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the U.N. General Assembly today that the time is quickly running out to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear power. He said Iran should be prevented to produce highly enriched uranium the ingredient of a nuclear weapon, a capability Iran could reach by next spring or summer. Netanyahu spelled out the conversion of medium-enriched uranium into highly enriched fuel as the red line that Iran should not be allowed to pass.
Netanyahu added that if the red line is communicated clearly to Iran, presumably by both Israel and the U.S., Iran could back down and the Iranian nuclear impasse could be resolved peacefully. He also said that Israel is discussing options with the U.S. if the Iranian program gets near the red line.

  1. Iran is getting the bomb, and there is nothing they can do about it, unless they invade and occupy the whole country. They may employ delaying actions by military means, but it will not stop Iran from eventually aquiring the bomb, cause Iran will get nuclear weapons one way or the other.

  2. Another alternative would be to basically accept a nuclear armed Iran. The Iranian regime would not dare use nuclear weapons against anyone, they are smarter than that. It would serve as a deterrent and garantuee against a military land campaign against Iran, like if then there is an immediate existential threat to their survival, a military agression towards the country aimed at destroying the regime.

  3. Most probably Netanyahu's red line, as arbitrarily as it has been drawn, is already behind reality ...

  4. The line in fact is very deliberate...
-Everyone already knows what needs to be known:
    1. Tehran will not cross the line
    2. All participants may return to base and claim victory for home audiences.
    3. Defuses for now, what would have been exceedingly destabilizing.
    4. Provides time for enhanced operations

Containment will be good for arms dealers.

If however, Tehran is bent on forcing the issue... all bets are off

deal on 20% should be approaching... the alternative is immeasurably dangerous

  5. Despite all the snarling, this speach is actually very positive.
The deadline for attack is now the summer of 2013, and not before the US elections. If anything I think Mr. Natanyahu was trying to bring his policy closer to the Obama administration, recognizing that there is a great chance that president Obama will win re-election.

  6. I agree with Anon 5:25 PM. Once Iran acquires a nuclear weapon; even a handful, a US/Israeli attack becomes very unlikely. Bombs, warships etc are no longer part of the equation anymore.

Nuclear weapons are the national equivalent of individual firearms ownership. A gun eliminates the variables of one individual's weight or strength. An old grandma with a pistol can drop a 200 lb burglar. Similarly, a militarily weak nation like Iran can deter an attack by a much larger and powerful nation like the United States if they have a nuclear weapon. It doesn't matter how many more nuclear warheads Israel or the US has. If Iran has a handful, it becomes too risky to initiate a conflict. Entire Carrier Groups, refineries, cities, bases, etc are in close proximity, and nobody is willing to take that chance.

That's how much of a game changer nuclear weapons are. Iran's leadership knows that fact, gaining nuclear weapons is such a valuable outcome they are willing to give up short term economic prosperity for it.

And if you think Israel will actually carry out its threat in summer of 2013 then I have a bridge to sell you.

  8. Netanyahu’s ‘red line’ mocked on Twitter:

The cartoon used by the PM is something one would expect from a Dr. Strangelove sequel. He's the laughing stock of the internet and late night television.

  10. The red line has been moved to 2013, because they are also going to see who will replace Mr. Ahmedinejad.
And maybe someone is counting on another green revolution.

I believe that if superpowers will not dismantle their WMD and continue their bullying, more oppressed countries will seek cheap and formidable defenses, which are provided by a nuclear detterent.

Mr. Jalili has submitted a proposal to freeze the 20% enrichment in exchange for lifting the sanctions and it will give Iran an additional time...
Also, Obama's administration can use that fact for an explanation that a time is needed to study that proposal.

  11. This was a powerful and effective speech by Netanyahu, probably the best he’s delivered at UNGA. Notwithstanding the cartoonish diagram, he explained Iran’s nuclear program and its advancement in a simple yet clear manner. Set a definitive limit for Iran’s uranium enrichment program. Offered a rather easy way for Iran to back down by stopping its enrichment activities at the current level. And portrayed hope for a peaceful end to the current impasse. It’s always difficult to say positive things about the prime minister, but this was a shining moment for him.

  13. Excellent commentaries ... all thoughtfully related to the topic at hand!

I was the only soul on earth to recognize when a Netanyahu slowly became a Beast. Even his closest ally had a hard time realizing what they were dealing with due to electoral short-sightedness. The Iranians? Please, if I hadn't shown them how suicidal their “rope-a-dope” strategy were before two nuclear-armed foes we will all be suffering from radiation poisoning by now;). So when I say that what I saw before the UN General Assembly today was a grown man crying about the fact that he lacked the x-factor necessary to command Men into an inferno, you should take it to the bank. For the reasons why read my article: “NETANYAbooHU: The Sobbing Realities of a THREE TRILLION DOLLAR World War” at … http://hamsayeh.net/articles/2335-netanyaboohuthe-sobbing-realities-of-a-three-trillion-dollar-world-war.html.

Please do note that the article was written on 9/25/12 @ 3:39 PM in anticipation of Netanyahu's limitations. It was posted before his speech so that no one can claim that I am showboating. The bottom line: from my first article “2012: the ascension of the beast” I highlighted the exact date (4/08/12) Bibi imposed a zero-tolerance for any Iranian enrichment on the P5+1. But today, Mr. Netanyahu raised the bar to 90% enrichment!!! This is peace talk and I LOVE IT. A peaceful settlement is at hand after the elections and before his new 'red line of spring or summer,' provided that Mr. Sarkozy is wrong and Bibi is not a liar on this. But if Obama feels that the race is too close for comfort, Bibi just gave him the 'flexibility' to pull a November diplomatic surprise. I guess what am saying is he just re-elected Obama.

    2Cold.

  14. hasn't Iran already offered to stop the 20% enrichment in exchange for pre-enriched plates before?

  19. I see some of you if not all are excited about israel's personalities and about that entity.

Some time in the past, South Africa and israel closely cooperated, including the nuclear cooperation. Today "white SA's system" is gone and tomorrow the same fate will repeat in the SA's former partner. They believe that rule by a force and by using the same type of walls and fences will prolong their fate... to the eternity.

For me that poster presented by that zionist, was a kind of childish stunt, which; like I see, is admired by some important personalities of this blog.

  20. @ Jabber and Nader ,It’s just priceless watching Netanyahu take a crude picture of a bomb to the podium of the United Nations, an institution set up to ensure ‘peace’ in the world, and demanding a war on another nation in full gaze of the world. And he based this demand for war on an international Treaty – the NPT – that he and his nation have shunned and refused to sign.

So a warmongering, non-member of the NPT was telling the IAEA and the UN General Assembly that they should launch a war against a member state of the NPT, tear up the Charter of UN in the process, and turn the UN openly and formally into a full-fledged war machine in service of the interests of a few.

Bravo to this unparalleled hypocrisy!Bravo To looney Tunes!
And Bravo to who find his speech positive!
Indeed truth is stranger than fiction.
