Iran Ranks 76 in Human Development Index

Iran has ranked 76th among 187 countries in the latest Human Development Index (HDI) Report. Norway, Australia and the United States lead the rankings, while Democratic Republic of the Congo and Niger have the lowest scores.

The HDI is a measure of national achievement in health, education and income and is published by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Iran's HDI value for 2012 was 0.742, life expectancy was 73.2 years and gross national income per capita was $10, 695.

    1. And Turkey rank worse. Note smaller (and countries with smaller population) countries can get better ranks in similar conditions. Turkey has a little more population than Iran and therefore Iran is a little higher while in fact both countries are almost the same

    2. Reading the comments on this board, it becomes apparent that most people commenting here dont know how to analyze these reports accurately. they just look at the country rank of 76 in 2012 and think its a bad score. So let me break it down for you guys.

      1) Iran's rank in 1975 when the shah was at the top of his game economically, was only 96/159. So thus being in the lower 40%. If you look at the ranking you'll see that the only 2 countries in the Middle east that had less human development scores than the Shah's Iran, were Yemen, Azerbaijan, Syria and the Palestinians. Iran barely did better than Jamaica.
Bahrain Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, Oman, SA, Lebanon, Jordan, Armenia and Turkey
      http://www.photius.com/rankings/human_developement_index_1975-2005.html

      2) The score improved 67% from 1980 to 2012 making Iran's rankings jump from 94 up to 76. This is the fastest improvement in human development in the world after South Korea. This brought Irans category from "underdeveloped country" to "high development".
-Iran added around 25 years to its population life expectancy from age 50 to 73.
-The literacy rate went from 35% to 90%
-The gross national income per capita also increased by about 48 percent between 1980 and 2012.
-And the number of years Iranians spend in school increased by 6 years since the 1970s

When the Shah left Iran Iran was not just one of the most backwards countries in the world, but even most of its neighbors in the middle east had better scores

  3. Second biggest gas resources, fourth biggest oil resources and about fourteenth in mineral resources.Plus if managed well a good possibility of high grain production and export. But because you have a regime that only cares for Hezbollah the Palestinians and Assad's regime it's no wonder Iran is placed at 76th.
For Iran to go forward it must shed the third world regime.

    1. Another blind comment. This development index is about how HUMAN resources are developed not how oil fields are developed

      Delete
    2. You must be blind then, where did I say oil fields developed ?
I said we have all the resources, but the regime is too selfish
and don't care less about Iranian people or the social development
of the country.Except for them to ram Islamic Shiite Tripe down
      peoples throats.

    3. Compare Iran with countries with similar condition. Russia is much richer than Iran and is not under sanctions and is the reminiscent of a super power and yet it is just slightly better than Iran. Turkey is similar does not have oil but have good lands and resources and also is not sanctioned and has access to European market and yet it is lower than Iran. Saudis has less than half of our population and more than 3 times of our oil (so 10 times more rich at least) and not under sanctions etc and yet they are just slightly better and you can be sure that their position will degrade in time. For other smaller countries like Qatar etc you should note that they are comparable to big countries

    4. All of the following countries are ahead of the Islamist terrorist regime: Israel, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Libya, and Lebanon. Not to mention South Korea (which had a smaller economy than Iran in 1979!), Argentina, Romania, Bulgaria, Mexico (not exactly a "small" country!), Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Albania, and Georgia. Exactly how pathetic is the Islamist terrorist regime!?!

    5. Anon 4:13....Russia has four times the population of Iran. And frankly the way Iran's social conditions are under the fascist Islamic terrorists I rather live in Putin's Russia.

    6. No it is barely have 2 times of Iran population and as I said 10 times bigger and was a super power for many years

      Delete
    7. Turkey has the same population as Iran without the oil and gas resources yet their GDP and PPP is much higher than Iran.
The reason is because of the type of regime that is in control of Iran.
And please don't blame the sanctions because in the end of the day it is the type of government Iran is "blessed" with that has caused our people untold hardships.
Yes Russia has a population twice that of Iran and not four times as I mentioned earlier but yet their GDP and PPP is higher than Iran.
As said earlier Iran's problem is the type of regime in power which is causing the countries resources to be diverted to projects and agendas more suitable to the regimes ideology which is counterproductive to Iran's future social economic development.

  4. The ranking number is much less important than the status category. The Islamic Republic of Iran's ranking is within the category of "High Human Development" which is quite good for a developing country.

Nader, you really should have included this categorization in your post.

Iran is ranked behind Kazakhstan, Serbia and Libya..... and you want to call an ancient and cultured nation stuck in the middle of the list of nations "quite good" and call mediocre "remarkable"?

a nation less than 70 years old and embroiled in war and conflict for all that time is ranked #12........

you might benefit from learning how to write words based on truth rather than whatever you're currently engaged in doing

but how are doing filling up at your California gas stations? care to pretend that the prices are ruinous some more?

  5. Thank you Mr Uskowi !
Remarkable achievement ,a rise from 0.443 in 1980's to 0.742 and a growth rate of roughly 2 percent annually
considering it had 8 years of war and 33 years of embargo !
it is interesting to note that Iran's three Major rivals in the region KSA ,TURKEY and EGYPT are performing less even though they did not have such limitations imposed on them.

Egypt from 0.407 to 0.662 2.0 annual Growth
Turkey from 0.474 to 0.722 1.9 annual Growth

Iran reached turkey in 1995 and after a close 10 year marathon surpassed it in 2005 today turkey is standing 28 levels bellow Iran.

KSA from 0.575 to 0.782 1.3% annual Growth

the case of KSA is curious as they benefit from an enormous oil revenue divided among a less populated public and better starting position in 1980's (0.575 compared to Iran's 0.443 )and yet their annual HDI growth rate is less than 1.3 percent annually.

    3. I hope you realize that all of the countries you named have less population and had a higher standing ,30 years ago ?
Iran today stands taller than any other Muslim country in the world when population is accounted .this is a fact either you like it or not!
another interesting fact is that in the 1980's it stood in the bottom 1/4 of the same category of countries .
our perspective that life was good in the shahs time is a product of our parents ignorance as they only saw the middle class residing in the big cities ,the picture HDI is portraying is Chrystal clear when it comes to equality among the masses fortunately or unfortunately IRI stands taller than Imperial Iran.this is a fact!!

    4. Nope, but nice try. I also named Mexico, which has a considerably larger population. Anyway, where is it written that countries with larger populations should necessarily have lower HDIs. Is that a new special rule to apply to old Number 76 (aka the Islamist Terrorist Regime)? (The US is ranked higher in HDI than the Netherlands, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Iceland, New Zealand, etc). The IRI doesn't even make the Top 100 among states in life expectancy and infant mortality (not even the Top 100!). Moreover, the Terrorist Regime has made more money from oil revenues in the past 8 years alone than Iran made in the preceding century (going all the way back to the Qajar era!). Despite enjoying high oil revenues only during the period of 1973-1978, Iran had a larger economy than South Korea in both 1970 and 1979. Now, South Korea would laugh at a Third World Terrorist Regime like the Ayatollah Republic. Like I said, though, nice try!

    5. What's with your constant obession of comparing Iran to South Korea. Why necessarily South Korea?

      population counts !
which one is bigger X divided by 6 million or X divided by 76 million?
      Go get your Math Fixed!
      starting position counts!
Suppose your goal is to reach No 76 who has a better performance the one who started @ 65 or the one who started @114?
      Run Forrest Run!
about IRI making more money you are making 2 crucial mistakes
      1)1 USD in 1978 equals 13 USD in 2013 ,Ergo 17USD/Barrel equals 198USD/Barrel in 2010
2)up until 1979 Iran did not get 100% of oil revenues until 1951 it was 15% of BP's Accounting Profits and between 54 and 1978 it received 51% of Profit
in fact Never Before the revolution Iranians received a fair share of their Natural resources!!

      Go figure !!!
All of this contradicts what daddy said right !I'm sorry honey you need to grow up !being an adult is not easy!

    7. For one thing, South Korea went through a destructive and deadly war (more deadly even for civilians, in fact, than Khomeini's war to "liberate" Karbala and then Qods). It's noteworthy that Iran had a bigger economy in 1979 than South Korea -- the year that the animal Khomeini and his followers came to power. For another, South Korea is an example of a country which has been able to raise its living standards to that of an industrialized developed democracy in a few decades -- a night and day difference from the Islamist Terrorist Regime. But, if you prefer, here is just a small sample of other countries ahead of the Terrorist Regime: Israel, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Lebanon, Argentina, Romania, Bulgaria, Mexico, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Albania, Georgia -- but I'm sure you will find another reason why Number 76 is a "remarkable" and "quite good" 'achievement'. Oh, yeah!

      you never mentioned Mexico !!
Mexico had an HDI value of 0.6 in 1980 Iran was 0.443 back then !
look at them now Mexico 0.780 Iran 0.742 who do you think has done a better Job?

same goes with South Korea they where 0.7 back in the 80's this means they enjoyed high human development plan back then (consider World Average HDI was .56 )Iran was way bellow this average !

your last comment about US of A does not make sense have you ever heard the word Super power does it ring a Bell?????

CASUE last time I checked !
      they killed Palestinians FIRST class
      they KILLED IraQI's First Class
      shall I name more?
the Old Imperial System was not sustainable if it was it would have stayed and don't tell me Carter collaborated with Khomeini to depose them !this bed time story by your grandma is boring!

  7. @Anon 6:47 PM --

Look at my comment from March 16 at 4:46 PM: I wrote, "Mexico (not exactly a "small" country!)".

BTW, if one looks at life expectancy and infant mortality, the IRI's ranking are even more pathetic. In life expectancy, it is ranked somewhere between 102nd and 132nd:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_life_expectancy

In infant mortality, it is ranked 108th:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_infant_mortality_rate

Obviously, not even making the Top 100 in these important measures of wellbeing is another great IRI "achievement". Go, Number 108, Go!!!
