Fourth Quake Hitting Iran in Ten Days
A 5.0-magnitude earthquake
hit southern Iran at 2:11 a.m. on Saturday 20 April (5:41 p.m. EST on Friday),
the USGS reported. The epicenter was 57 km (35 miles) from Kish, a major island at
the mouth of the Persian Gulf. No reports of casualties were available at this
time.
Kish earthquake is the fourth
tremor hitting Iran in the past ten days. A 6.3-magnitude quake shook Bushehr
on 9 April, followed by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hitting Baluchistsn on both
sides of the border between Iran and Pakistan. On Thursday, a 5.3-magnitude
tremor hit Iranian Azerbaijan.
I know there are regular earthquakes in Iran but what's happening now one after another and with such magnitude,it could mean something bigger will follow soon.
ReplyDeleteNot necessarily. These are regular occurrences on the Iranian plateau. The only difference is that Iranian scientific sector and monitoring is much more advanced now. There are seismic information gathering stations all over and the data is disseminated in real-time. This also assists in planning and relief. Luckily, Iran is better prepared. China, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, India and Chile are also high activity zones.
