EU Must Ease Sanctions to Seize Opportunity Opened by Rouhani’s Victory - Iran Envoy

The Iranian ambassador to the European Union, Mahmoud Barimani, said today Rouhani’s election has provided “an opportunity” for EU and now “it's up to the European Union to grasp it.” (Press TV, 1 July)

Barimani made the remark in an interview with EUobserver on Monday.

“We (Iran and Europe) enjoyed a very good relationship for decades, even centuries, so we want the EU and its member states to end what we call this 'transitory period' and to restore cooperation,” Barimani said.

Barimani called for an end to EU sanctions against Iran. He ruled out the possibility of Iran’s suspension of uranium enrichment, but declared Iran’s readiness for more transparency.

“We are ready to show more transparency [on nuclear activities], but I think the relaxation or lifting of sanctions would be a very good sign from the European side,” he said. (Press TV, 1 July)

  1. merely some more in the constant outpouring of hilarious and obvious bullshift from the Iranian government.

the theocracy has had several years to show transparency on their nuclear programand having an election doesn't do a dam thing to show any.

the theocracy gets to keep living with the sanctions until they show some. the opportunity to do so is something that they must grasp.

Iran has gone beyond what it needed to do under the npt,the problem here is not and never has been "transparency" but iranian mastery of the fuel cycle and a credible japan option, that the west continues to impose more sanctions just after the election of a new president shows that the west is not interested in a "reset" or a negotiated solution the agenda is still regime change

    2. If Iran has done all it need do under the NPT, why did the Russians and Chinese joined the West in imposing round after round of sanctions?

    3. A little thing called politics perhaps you`ve heard of it?,iran contends that its file should never have been passed to the security council which has no jurisdiction on this issue and for that reason iran does not consider itself bound by those sanctions, the fact remains iran is in compliance and no material is unaccounted for and that is really all that matters all the rest is just politics

The chinese and russian have only gone along with one round of un security council sanctions, they have certainly not "joined the West in imposing round after round of sanctions" the vast bulk of the sanctions have been unilateral american ones that the European lick spittles stupidly and at great cost to themselves went along with

    5. are you THAT ignorant ??????

the Russians and Chinese went along with 8 Security Council resolutions sanctioning Iran...... that's 8, my friend.

      8 not 1.

      SC Resolutions 1696, 1737, 1747,1803, 1835, 1929. 1984, 2049.......

you could look it up if you have access to reference works.

or you could remain an ignorant person passing bullsh1t off as truth.

    6. The only one that matters is the first if you had bothered to read it,the rest are just attempts to ratchet up the pressure on iran with the russians and chinese squeezing as many concessions as possible out of the west for going along with the charade, the fact remains iran is in compliance and all materials are accounted for, this is about iranian control of the fuel cycle and the attempts by the west to prevent it,its really that simple

    7. gad, but you have no regard for truth.......

first you claim it was only one, but now you claim that the other seven don't count.

  3. EU's bankrupt economies are suffering as they lose the lucrative Iranian markets. France is already looking at increasing trade with Iran and with US-EU ties going to hell due to clumsy CIA/NSA bugging of EU governments there is growing anti-Americanism in Europe. Germany and France will more than likely break with US on Iran. The puny Brits are Zionist controlled poodles and will keep on barking the US/Zionist failed tune. Iran is almost a $800 billion economy is real terms and is a rich market of close to 80 million consumers and offers a great avenue for trade and investment to a failing EU struggling with high debts, astronomical unemployment and declining manufacturing and also has high energy demand. Iran is a powerful, stable and convenient source for energy and trade.

  4. Yesterday in the NYT there was an article about the business woes of Peugeot. Before sanctions, Peugeot was doing a brisk business with Iran. Now, sanctions are only worsening Peugeot's predicament.

Iran's offer remains open: greater transparency, for recognition of nuclear rights and stripping away of sanctions. It really is that simple.

    1. your comment is also a bit simple. the ship sailed on "greater transparency" no one is going to remove sanctions without first fully inspecting and verifying.

it's that simple. Iran's bullshit and bluster and trying to treat this matter as if they're rug merchants and the the rest of the world are ignorant, gullible householders has failed.

    2. Inspecting has always been open till they assassinated 5 of our nuclear scientists. Should we again open the doors to UN disguised CIA spies?

When you make statements like this you only proclaim your ignorance to everyone here.Iran as part of the npt is subject to rigorous inspections, the iaea has continually verified that no diversion of fissile material has taken place. In future you might want to do some basic research before posting here, rather than relying on fox "news" that is.

    4. I think iran would be better off looking to china and south korea for its future automotive licensing agreements not the untrustworthy europeans,of course I would not overlook the possibilities that reverse engineering and industrial espionage of european autos could afford iran, but I would no longer trust them to honor any agreements nor would I consider myself bound by the same if were iran

  5. Dream on. No one trusts iranians

    1. I really wish Zionists would move back to the bankrupt ghettos of Europe and US and leave the world alone. Jewish fanned Communism destroyed USSR and now Zionism is destroying USA that is like typical Jewish behavior through the times of Cyrus the Great to the Occupation of Palestine, bankster fraud, land theft, genocide and organ harvesting.

  7. The damage has been done.No amount of wheeling and dealing will reverse the sanctions so soon as to recover from the previous two years.Iraq is still sanctioned for certain things since during Saddam.
