these are well-designed and well-built old American aircraft and, despite Iran's inability to engineer and build any or their own aircraft, Iranian mechanics have done very well to keep these old planes flying.... and nicely painted!

Bunch of Craps!! Poor maintenance and lack of original parts make life difficult and dangerous for our brave pilots.

These pure maintenance Keep not only Iran ,but also syrian airforce since 3 years in Service

Far from it!,if it wasnt for irans considerable ability to reverse engineer components and rebuild whole airframes none of the us supplied aircraft would be operational, the same is also true for most of the russian supplied/former iraqi aircraft,in addition iran has begun to totally refurbish the iraqi mirage fleet, this by itself is no small achievement and plans to d the same with the iraqi su22 fleet.Irans ability to keep its airforce not only flying but to also upgrade its capabilities and to add new aircraft to the fleet is nothing short of amazing,by comparison the saudis cannot even maintain their airforce without a lot of western help

Thank god the Shah had the foresight to aquire all those fighter planes back in the seventies. Because if it wasn't for that foresight Iran would have only the old MIG 19 and MIG 21 as main backbone of airforce. Money well spent indeed.

I agree with your comment, but we only find out about their real impact in a (I hope it will not happen) direct military confrontation with the US fighters in the region. My guess is that they will be of very limited significance or not at all if that happens. The Iranian missiles on the other hand will play a much bigger role.

Ahh,I hate to break this too you but iran doesnt have mig 19s or 21s,indeed the only migs in the airforce are the mig29s which were acquired in the 90s

I know that.If Iran didn't have the Phantom F4,Northrop F5 and Grumman F14 then they would have been forced to buy the cheaply availabe MIG 19 and 21 because Russia never would have sold the large numbers of MIG 29 Iran required . Don't forget the F7 is a Chinese copy of the Russian MIG 21 with modern avionics.
