ReplyDeleteSo why the combat version is not used? Political reasons? or capabilities issues?
ReplyDeleteThere is no reason to fully use these as UCAV in a situation like that in Syria where you have a full scale war in the country. You need tons of bombs to be dropped down, not a couple of precision rockets or missiles. Of course for a high profile mission, maybe the Syrians will arm the UAV but the main purpose is till reconnaissance. Intelligence gathering is the main concern and the UAV is really helping the Syrians to fill that gap quickly both at a tactical but also strategic level with long endurance flights.
ReplyDeleteBesides that the Syrians are using the UAVs as airborne relay station for their communication needs in certain regions where their ground troops/recon teams need quick communication relayed to the central command. Iranians have for that purpose equipped the Syrian UAVs with special equipment which can provide the necessary relaying service.
One thing is clear, the war in Syria would have been in different state without the UAVs where the Syrians would have lost the intelligence war against the rebels.
