Heavily
armed gunmen stormed into a military-run school in Pakistani city of Peshawar
today, killing at least 145 teachers and schoolchildren in one of the biggest
human tragedies in the country’s history. The siege of the school continued for
eight hours, with terrorists fighting security forces, and a large number of
students trapped inside the school compound, before the last of the attackers
was killed.
A
spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban said the group was responsible for the
attack and said it was I retaliation for the military’s offensive against them
in North Waziristan. The attackers opened fire on students with guns and grenades.
Some students managed to flee. (The New York Times, 16 December)

The corrupt US controlled Pakistani ISI was instrumental in creating the Taliban that fought Soviet forces with U.S. help and then gave Pakistan influence over Afghanistan after their withdrawal in 1989. Pakistan is also home to various Saudi funded Wahabbi/Salafi terror groups including Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group held responsible for a commando-style assault on Mumbai that killed 174 people in 2008. Though officially outlawed, its members operate freely; one of its founders, Hafiz Saeed, lives openly in Lahore and has been a frequent user of social media. It is time US seriously evaluate its ties to a brutal military dictatorship and stop the militarization of Pakistan. Congress just last week approved another $1 billion in military assistance to Pakistan.
