Fars News Agency reports that Russian and Iranian officials have held talks on the purchase of Sukhoi 30 jet fighters by Iran from Russia. It's not clear if this is not just technology transfer, though.

Why Su-30 and not SU-35? Does anyone know?
ReplyDeleteSU-30 can be delivered immediately while the SU-35 has a production backlog for even Russian airforce, which is modernizing at a rapid rate. Another good option for Iran is to get 50 MIG 29 SMT and upgrade the ones already in Iranian inventory.
DeleteThanks for reply. Makes sense. Mig 29 SMT is cheap and we already know how to operate and repair. I hope if they are going for SU-30 SM then they go for technology transfer like India otherwise cheaper Mig 29 SMT with BVR and ground radar target illumination is good enough (It is said SU-30 has a strong radar)
DeleteIs there any information suggesting Russia has a different view as the rest of the powers regarding the continuation for 5 years of the arms embargo under the nuclear deal. I'm aware Russia has been consistent in saying some sort of S-300 deal is viewed as being outside the deal. Are other systems also considered outside? Are any deals signed soon perhaps envisaging deliveries to begin in 5 years? Also, how much do we know what is and isn't covered regarding technology transfers?
DeleteActually Russia and China both wanted that 5 year clause out, but somehow Zarif let it stand. The sanctions regime is already crumbling and I don't think Russia will care much after the French embargoed the Mistral helicopter carriers and are now negotiating to sell to bankrupt Egypt. However, considering the unreliable Russian policy towards Iran since 1800's I would doubt it that Russia will deliver anything. The memorandum of the S-300 delivery is even very vague.
DeleteThe Egyptians seem to be getting their hands on all kinds of fancy weaponry from M 1 tanks to Kamov-52 helicopters, S-330 system and Rafale fighter jets . It's very difficult for a bankrupt country with a questionable government to put together such a boutique military , unless rich Arab Gulf states are bankrolling them .
DeleteSaudis and UAE are paying for all Egyptian military purchases. This is appalling for a country that is totally living on aid and has to import 4 million tons of wheat just to feed its fastest growing population now at 93 million.
DeleteWhat's the difference between those two models anyway ? Iran's ragtag air force won't be able to fully take advantage of those planes capabilities .But it'll be interesting to see how these negotiations will turn out , since Iranians have always been shy about buying top of the line Russian fighter jets .
ReplyDeleteShy? Hasn't there been an arms embargo?
ReplyDeleteAbout the Iranian official In the top photo (second from the right) : isn't he the ex-Saipa CEO who used to run Iran Khodro for a while ?
ReplyDeleteWhy would you call anybodies air force ragtag? Whether USAF or the Luxemburg Royal Auxillary Air Force all men and women are magnificent in their flying machines. Better than probably most of us!

ReplyDeleteWhen you put USAF and Luxemburg Royal Auxiliary Air Force in one sentence , you're making an impeccable argument .You surely didn't miss the point .
Anybody can name that official ? From assembling Renault 5 and Pekans to possible technology transfer for manufacturing Su-34 , that individual's career is certainly in an up swing .
