Iran Gives IAEA Explanation about Past Nuclear Work

Iran handed over information about its nuclear activities to the IAEA today, a milestone in meeting a condition for sanctions relief under the nuclear deal, JCPOA, signed last month. As part of the deal, Iran signed a separate agreement with the IAEA to resolve all outstanding questions about possible military dimensions (PMD) to its nuclear work.

“Iran today provided the IAEA with its explanation in writing and related documents as agreed in the road map for clarification of past and present outstanding issues regarding Iran’s nuclear program,” the IAEA said on Saturday, confirming Iran had made a deadline.

Full sanctions relief can only go ahead once the IAEA says Iran has complied with all its commitments under JCPOA and clarification of its past nuclear activities

  1. The Iranians actually reached such a state with IAEA previously, under the term of Mohamed ElBaradei. For that, the Iranians received nothing in return, such as an accepted right to uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes and withdrawal of sanctions. In fact, what they received were demands for zero enrichment, and more sanctions.

Fast forward to 2015, this time around the Iranians would not simply give away such a level of cooperation with IAEA (some argue this is beyond the mandate of IAEA) without enrichment acceptance and withdrawal of sanctions. Now, along with JCPOA, Iran's status with IAEA is being worked at to effectively restore that which existed during a point during the ElBaradei administration.

    1. Good luck,I think the first step towards this would be the speedy retirement or better yet resignation of mr amano who did so much to undermine the iaeas hard won impartiality and credibility with regards iran and in general that was brought about in no small order by the immense hard work of drs blix and elbaradei.
